Bangor’s iconic Paul Bunyan statue will get a fresh paint job this summer.

The city has approved $15,000 for the paint job for the 31-foot, 3,700-pound statue and five information kiosks, according to News Center Maine .

Bunyan last got a paint job about 15 years ago .

Bunyan has stood in Bangor since 1959. Local artist J. Normand Martin, who died at age 95 in May 2021 , was paid $137 to design a model that served as the template for the iconic statue honoring the city’s rich lumber history. It was constructed by New York-based Messmoor and Damon.

Martin unsuccessfully pushed to pair Bunyan with his mythic giant blue ox Babe in 2015.

News Center Maine reported that the painting should take just a week and be completed before the end of August.
