49-count indictment handed down from March 6 standoff in Hyannis

BARNSTABLE — A Hyannis man accused of holding his mother at knifepoint on March 6 and keeping Barnstable police at bay during an hours-long standoff faces additional charges after he was indicted by a grand jury.

Justin Moreira was originally arraigned March 7 in Barnstable District Court .

On June 28, a Barnstable Superior Court grand jury handed up a 49-count indictment against Moreira. That includes 13 counts of firearm-armed assault to murder, 14 counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and 13 counts of assault and battery attempt with a firearm.

He also faces charges of kidnapping, possession of firearm during a felony, intimidation of a witness, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, and carrying a firearm and ammunition without a permit.

Moreira pleaded not guilty to all charges at his July 12 arraignment, according to court documents. He is being held without bail following a dangerousness hearing that will resume on Aug. 1.

Around 7:41 a.m. on March 6, Barnstable police officers were called to 24 St. Francis Circle in Hyannis after receiving a report that Moreira was holding his mother at knifepoint , according to police. The caller told the dispatcher he, his mother and another female had barricaded themselves in a basement bedroom, and Moreira, who was likely armed, was somewhere inside the house, according to police.

Officers were able to free the three people through a window.

An hours-long standoff ensued where Moreira shot at an armored SWAT vehicle seven times, the police allege in a report.

At the time, Moreira's mother told a police lieutenant that her son was scheduled to attend a court date at Barnstable Superior Court that morning. The court appointment was related to an indictment stemming from charges that he had allegedly threatened to shoot up a school in May 2022.

Moreira's mother has an active license to carry permits, according to prosecutors.

Moreira is represented by J.W. Carney and Nathaniel R. Carney. Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Michael Kevin Giardino is listed as the prosecutor.
