Kenny Bednarek's journey as an athlete has taken him across the world, including to his second Olympics this summer. More than 4,000 miles separate Paris, the site of the 2024 Olympics, and Rice Lake, where Bednarek got his start on the track. Rice Lake Speedway suffers another rainout; special events coming up
The Rice Lake Speedway suffered its sixth rainout of the 2024 racing season on Saturday night. An inch of rain during the morning of the 13th plus the combination of poor drying conditions due to lack of sun and wind plus high humidity all made it impossible to prepare the track and grounds for racing, and the program was canceled early in the afternoon. Haugen sweeps Hayward to shake up Independent League standings
There’s been a shakeup atop the Independent League standings after the Haugen Knights traveled to Hayward Saturday and swept the Hawks by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. The Knights have now won four games in a row and are 6-3 in league play, tied with Brill for first place with three games remaining. The Millers do hold a 2-0 series lead on the Knights with a July 27 game between the two teams the final regular season contest. ...
4th annual roller ski races see record number compete
A record number of athletes were in action for the fourth annual roller ski races held Friday and Saturday in Rice Lake. A total of 51 men and 28 women competed in the Shoreline Sprints Saturday on Lakeshore Drive, as the 79 in action topped last year’s total by nearly 30. During the distance races on Friday east of Rice Lake on Highway W, a total of 45 roller skiers competed. ...

Recent Rice Lake High School graduate Eliana Sheplee was named the winner of the Pat Richter Award from the Wisconsin Sports Network as the Three-Sport Athlete of the Year. Ellefson Memorial 5K Aug. 10 in Barron
The annual Lyndon Ellefson 5K Memorial Run is Aug. 10 at the Rockman's Woods trail in Barron. The race begins at 9 a.m. with the top three male and female finishers in each age division receiving medals. Timing will be conducted by Tortoise and Hare Race Management. Those registered receive a T-shirt and day pass to the Barron Area Community Center. For entry fees and race registration visit thebacc.com/lyndon-ellefson-memorial-run. Golf outings to benefit emergency services group
Emergency Services of Barron County, a nonprofit group of volunteers who respond to emergencies throughout the county, is hosting two separate golf outings to raise funds. The first outing will be held on Aug. 17 at Rolling Oaks Golf Coast in Barron, and the second is slated for Sept. 15 at the Cumberland Golf Course. Registration is open for Rice Lake youth soccer
Registration is open for the Rice Lake Soccer Association fall season of youth soccer. This program is open to all kids born between 2010-2020 from all area towns. Kids born in 2017-2020 practice and play games at Moon Lake Park on Mondays and Wednesdays starting Aug. 26 from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Kids born in 2016-2017 practice and play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For kids born 2010-2016, a traveling program is offered which includes practice in Rice Lake starting Aug. 20 and games on Saturdays in Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, New Richmond and Rice Lake, with the season ending with a three-day tournament in Woodbury, Minnesota. Registration for the travel program closes July 21 and closes for non-travel on July 30. Adult volunteers are needed.
