Looking back: This week in eastern Idaho history
100 years agoWord came down this week in July 1924 that E.J. Newton of Idaho Falls, who had been searching in Blackfoot for his 16-year-old son, had learned that the boy was in Salt Lake City, Utah, and being held by officers of the juvenile court pending Newton’s arrival. Newton said the youth had left Price, Utah, on July 8, presumably to meet his father in Pocatello. Before the father got there, the boy left and made his way north, stopping in Blackfoot. He was last reported there on July 19, after which he had dropped off the map. The youth had been living with his mother in Price before leaving for Idaho. Dellie M. Simpkins of Idaho Falls, whose husband, Neil, a Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputy, had been shot and killed in June at Idaho Falls while serving a warrant, received $9,436.34 from the industrial accident board this week in 1924. An allowance of $200 for burial expenses was also approved. “Eight children come within the provisions of the compensation,” the Idaho Statesman reported.
