    STOP … THE … RUN

To keep hammering on this from earlier, the 2011 LSU defense allowed fewer than 17 points ten times and gave up 2.7 yards per carry.

The 2003 national champion defense gave up 938 rushing yards, allowed 2.3 yards per carry, and after allowing two rushing scores in the first two games got hit for a grand total of one rushing score before the BCS Championship.

The 2023 Tigers gave up 962 rushing yards and nine scores in the first six games.

They went 10-1 when allowing fewer than six yards per carry, was 0-2 when giving up more.

    LSU Key Player

    Garrett Nussmeier, QB Jr.
No pressure or anything, but try to follow THAT guy.

Nussmeier isn’t a runner - there be a different look to the attack without Jayden Daniels - but he’s a good passer who can spread the wealth around.

Offenses under Brian Kelly have been great over the years even without Heisman-caliber playmakers. Nussmeier doesn’t have to be a superstar, but if LSU is going to the College Football Playoff he has to be really, really good.

LSU Football Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss

Top Transfer In: Jardin Gilbert, S Jr.
There aren’t too many transfers coming in who’ll get the starting call, but Gilbert is too good to leave out of the starting mix. The former Texas A&M Aggie missed most of last season, but in 2022 he was all over the place making 61 tackles with two picks and four broken up passes.

Top Transfer Out: Lance Heard, OT Soph.
He’s an elite left tackle who’d have found a spot somewhere, and he would’ve definitely been a starter for the Tigers next season, but the offense already has two next-level stars in Will Campbell and Emory Jones. The 6-6, 335-pound Heard will start on the left side of the Tennessee line.

    LSU Key Game

USC (in Las Vegas), Sept. 1
Of course a whole slew of SEC games will be put in the “just means more” category. Alabama is a big deal, going to Texas A&M will be fun, and hosting Ole Miss and Oklahoma will be wild. However, LSU needs to finally start a season on the right foot again.

The Tigers lost to Florida State in each of the last two season openers, dropped the 2021 lid-lifter to UCLA, and biffed the first games of 2020 in a shootout loss to Mississippi State.

    10 Best LSU Football Players

    1. Will Campbell, OT Jr.
    2. Harold Perkins, LB Jr.
    3. Emory Jones, OT Jr.
    4. Kyren Lacy, WR Soph.
    5. Greg Penn III, LB Sr.
    6. Miles Frazier, OG Sr.
    7. Major Burns, S Sr.
    8. Garrett Nussmeier, QB Jr.
    9. Mason Taylor, TE Jr.
    10. Bradyn Swinson, DE Sr.
