DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Five local dispensaries have cleared the first step required by the state of Ohio to secure the right to sell cannabis recreationally.

The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control has begun distributing provision licenses across the state. However, these licenses do not mean dispensaries can begin selling adult-use marijuana.

Dual-use licenses have been granted to the following dispensaries:

    • Healing Through Cannabis, Springfield
    • The Green Goat Dispensary, Piqua
    • Eagle Dispensaries 2, Wapakoneta
    • Harvest of Ohio, Beavercreek
    • Daily Releaf, Riverside

Many cannabis businesses have spent months preparing for this moment.

“We’ve been working so hard for so long with this and to finally be almost there, it’s just awesome,” said Zach Bradford, co-owner and manager of Ohio Cannabis Co.

Bradford says the past few months have been busy for Ohio Cannabis Co., a family-owned dispensary with three locations around the state including Piqua.

They’ve been preparing to launch recreational marijuana sales the moment they get the go-ahead.

“We staffed up a couple of weeks ago to be 100% ready to go. We have the inventory and everything all set. So we just need approval and we’re ready to go,” said Bradford.

Current medical permit holders positioned to apply for dual-use status who have already undergone many of the comprehensive checks are anticipated to have a much quicker turnaround for the issuance of licenses over the summer.

Bradford says while his dispensary waits on the state, they’re getting ready for an influx of customers through their doors.

“We tried to stock up at lower prices so that we can try and push those lower prices onto our customers,” said Bradford.

No certificates of operation have been issued yet. Licenses will be processed in the order received, according to the Division of Cannabis Control. No date has been set for sales.
