Morinaga America Foods, Inc. confirms it will expand operations in Orange County and investment $136 million. The move will create 204 jobs in Mebane.The Japanese company established its American subsidiary in 2013 and chose North Carolina for its first manufacturing site outside of Asia.The Mebane facility opened in 2015 and produces one of the company's signature products, the fruity candy HI-CHEW. Morinaga says demand for its most popular candy is driving the need for expansion. VinFast Hits The Brakes On American Invasion
Vietnamese automaker VinFast has confirmed what we suspected: its American assault has hit a bump in the road and production at its North Carolina plant has been delayed even further. The company announced the news in a press release, citing economic challenges, macroeconomic uncertainties, and a shift in the global EV landscape as the reasons for its latest delay. This plant was promised to grow jobs in the region, and VinFast was granted some $1.2 billion in state and county incentives to make its dream of producing EVs on US soil possible. However, the plant, first announced in March 2022, is now only "expected to begin production in 2028."

Lisa Gillespie, 37, of Fayetteville, is the principal of Mary McArthur Elementary School. She was nominated for 40 Under 40 because she "has created a successful school environment. Since becoming the principal of Mary McArthur Elementary she has helped the school to get out of 'low performing' status," nominator Shirley Braxton-McLaurin writes. "She successfully led the school through the pandemic by supporting and leading teachers through online teaching. ... She makes herself available to families and builds relationships with them. She is wise beyond her years, as I have seen her assist families with finding the resources they need as well as helping them to solve family issues or at least give an objective and honest view of the situation. She is an advocate for students with special needs and inclusion. She embraces the population, as she does all students, however, special needs kids hold a special place in her heart. Lisa Gillespie fosters growth in all she meets. She eagerly encourages her staff to seek higher education as well as challenge themselves with new roles. Rocky Mount man charged with statutory rape
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) - A Rocky Mount man is in jail after being charged with statutory rape. Kyle Sanders was arrested Tuesday at his home. Rocky Mount police say they got a call from a neighbor in the 800 block of South Tilery Street after getting information about a missing child and a wanted person. They say the victim was in Sanders’s home and taken to Nash UNC Health Care as a precaution.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The UNC System is awarding almost $29 million in grants to expand nursing education at 12 universities and NC’s Area Health Education Centers. “Like many states across the country, North Carolina is coping with an alarming drop in nursing professionals. The state is projected to have a shortage of up to 18,600 registered nurses over the next decade, a major challenge for health care providers and an aging patient population, according to an analysis by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Sheps Center for Health Services Research,” a UNC System announcement states.
