BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes beginning Monday as a portion of Jarvis Street is scheduled to close.

A portion of Jarvis St. between Charlotte Street and Clinton Street will be closed to traffic for the rehabilitation of the Jarvis St. railroad bridge.

Detours will be in place. There will also be limited pedestrian access.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-November.

The construction is part of an ongoing effort from the City of Binghamton and Mayor Jared Kraham to get Norfolk Southern Railway to improve the look and safety of its railroad bridges across the city.

Unlike road bridges, rail bridges are private property and not subject to local oversight.

Schumer demands answers from Norfolk Southern

In 2023, the City hired an engineering firm to compile a 900-page report on the status of 28 railroad bridges in the city. 15 of them were found to be in either severe or poor condition leading to structural and safety concerns. However, Norfolk Southern, who owns the bridges, conducted its own inspections and found them to be acceptable.

The Jarvis St. bridge is the second bridge to receive improvements. Rehabilitation of the Glenwood Avenue underpass began in October 2023 after the railroad company caved to the political pressure and agreed to repair many of its dilapidated bridges.

Norfolk Southern pledged to work on a total of seven bridges that were deemed in poor or severe condition. The company also disclosed that it plans to replace a steel rail bridge over Clinton Street.
