A Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Mansion in Michigan Comes to Market for $12.9 Million

Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophies and influence over the field of architecture and residential home design continue to make waves more than 65 years after his 1949 death. A Bay Area home modeled after the architect’s iconic Fallingwater commission was listed for $25 million last fall, and since then, at least two more homes by protégés of the GOAT designer have also landed on the market. Another home, this one in downtown Birmingham, Michigan, takes its cues from Wright’s Tirranna House in Connecticut and is now up for grabs with a $12.9 million price tag. Cindy Obron Kahn of The Agency holds the listing.
Set in the heart of downtown, the sprawling 1.5-acre estate at 834 Southfield Road is a nature lover’s paradise, with four bedrooms, six bathrooms, and three powder rooms sprinkled across its 13,000 square feet of living space. The home was completed in 2000 and uses a blend of contrasting natural materials like wood and stone to play up its contemporary design. Interior features include wood-burning fireplaces and an indoor pool, but there’s also free-flowing access to the grounds, which include lush gardens and a waterfall.
The sunken formal living room has a stainless-steel and wood fireplace as its focal point.
A gold-toned front door opens into the abode, where the open-plan design includes walls of windows that blur visual distinctions between indoor and outdoor spaces as well as an open stairwell that provides a glimpse of the indoor pool on the lower level. The formal living room is the heart of the home, with west-facing windows and a unique ceiling design. A nearby terrace has ample space for seating and views of the verdant landscape.
Elsewhere on the main level stand the formal dining room and the gourmet kitchen. The former sits beneath a pentagon-shaped ceiling display and next to French doors that open out to a terrace. In the kitchen, a stainless-steel island anchors the room with an abundance of storage and a gas range. A row of skylights floods the airy room with natural light, while a home office and conference room are additional standout features.
Floor-to-ceiling glass in the primary suite bedroom allows for an intimate connection to the natural setting.
The spacious primary bedroom features a seating area with a fireplace, next to floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that let out to a private balcony. A massive walk-in closet sits off the illuminated corridor, leading to the en-suite bathroom with a soaking tub and shower. A wine cellar, home bar, and theater room are other amenities, not to mention the indoor glass mosaic pool. The latter sits on the lower level, next to a sauna and steam shower for relaxation.
