Better Know a B1G: Barry’s Badgers Battle Back
Wisconsin is a storied football program, albeit one with defined peaks and valleys in its program history. The Badgers are not only a charter member of the Big 10. They even won the first ever Big 10 championship in 1896 by going 2-0-1 in conference. They remained a powerhouse over the first 20 years of the conference’s existence, winning a total of 5 Big 10 titles between 1896-1912. They remained a competitive squad through the ‘20s and ‘30s, but did not win another conference title until ’42. The year went against the trend and the team didn’t get back into regular contention until the ‘50s under head coach Ivy Williamson. They won the Big 10 in ’52, ’59, and ’62, though they lost the Rose Bowl each time. For the rest of the ‘60s through the end of the ‘80s, they slid back into relative obscurity.
