Popular camping resource The Dyrt has released its 2024 rankings for the 'top 10' places to camp in the United States – and one Colorado spot made the cut to be included.
Found near the town of Blanca in Colorado's San Luis Valley, Sacred White Shell Mountain ultimately ranked 3rd on the nationwide list that also featured camping areas in nine other states.
This dispersed camping site is known for being very close to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, also a short drive from the popular Zapata Falls hike and near several fourteen-thousand-foot peaks.
While there's plenty of outdoor recreation to be found in the area of Sacred White Shell Mountain, the best perk of a stay in this camping area is perhaps the night sky. It's the perfect place to see a sunset that stretches to the horizon or to watch meteor showers zip by above what becomes one of the darkest places in the state after dusk.
According to The Dyrt, camping at Sacred White Shell Mountain is free – but don't expect too many amenities, though that's also part of the charm. Campers who visit this 4.5-star of five stars-rated site should be sure to pack out everything they pack in, ideally leaving their space even better than they found it.
May and June tend to be popular times to visit this campsite. The area offers little protection from the elements, so it's not too hot or cold during that time of the year, also offering visitors the chance to check out the seasonal Medano Creek found nearby at the Sand Dunes.
It's also worth noting that Sacred White Shell Mountain camping area was recently featured on The Dyrt's list of the best places to camp in the 'Mountain Region ,' ranking second on that list and featured alongside Summit County, Colorado's Prospector Campground, which ranked 9th .
