Farmer wins Newspaper of Year honors for 5th straight year
For the fifth consecutive year, the St. Tammany Farmer was named Newspaper of the Year among the state’s weekly publications by the Louisiana Press Association. Results of the organization’s Better Newspaper Contest were announced during the LPA’s annual meetings held July 19 at the City Club in Baton Rouge.

Cali Deal of Quitman High School has been selected to the 2024 SBLive Louisiana All-State Softball Team comprised of the top players in the state from all classifications and divisions. Splendora Police Uncover Narcotics and Loaded Firearm, Driver out on Murder Bond from Louisiana

Splendora Police Department detailed the incident in a Facebook post, as an officer, engaged in what began as a standard protocol for a minor violation, stumbled upon far more than anticipated when a subsequent vehicle search revealed both illegal narcotics and a loaded firearm. The gravity of the situation intensified as the driver’s background check illuminated an alarming fact, the 19-year-old was out on bond for murder in Louisiana.
NSU will introduce Genovese Tuesday
Northwestern State University will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 ,to introduce James. T. Genovese as the university’s 21st president. The event will be in the Sylvan Friedman Student Union Ballroom. All in the community are invited. Genovese, who has served as an associate justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court, was named the university’s president July 18 and will assume office in August. Tuesday’s program will include recognition of local and regional elected officials, figures from Genovese’s personal life, special presentations to the newly elected president and comments from Genovese.
Magnolia students can't have electronic devices during school hours
The Magnolia School District is reminding the public that a new district-wide cell phone policy takes effect this school year, which begins Thursday, July 25, 2024. No student will be allowed to possess on his or her person any cell phone, smartwatch, or similar electronic communication device, camera, MP3 player, iPod, or other portable music device during school hours.
