A man, his dog and a neighbor chased down and detained a 13-year-old boy Saturday night after he and two others broke into a west-side apartment.

The child was taken to the Bloomington Police Department and released to a relative. He was referred to juvenile probation authorities on a burglary charge that would be a felony if he were an adult.

The trio reportedly kicked in the front door of a West 12th Street residence intending to commit a burglary.

According to a Bloomington Police Department report, a 36-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were sitting on a living room couch inside the apartment in the 1300 block of West 12th Street when, around 11:20 p.m., three males dressed in dark clothing kicked in the front door and entered the room.

The man on the couch, followed by his dog, chased the three out of the apartment and to the east, the report said. An upstairs neighbor, who had heard the door forced open, joined the foot pursuit as well. BPD Capt. Ryan Pedigo said no weapons were involved.

The 13-year-old jumped onto a parked car to get away from the dog. The two men then walked the teen back to the apartment, which had a visible shoeprint on the door, and called the police.
