We went to press a day early this week due to the Fourth of July holiday and its importance to our area. If you don’t know, the Southport Fourth of July Festival is the official N.C. Fourth of July Festival and has been for more than 50 years. It’s also one of the longest running Fourth of July festivals in the country. It was a big deal when I was a kid and the visitor numbers rose to around 10,000 and it continues to be a big deal now and the visitor numbers swell to approximately four times that many. Yes, there are crowds and traffic that is the worst of the year between Southport and Oak Island, but it’s a pretty special event too.
