BORDENTOWN, NJ — A group of Bordentown Girl Scouts is using this summer to spread positivity to students at Bordentown Regional Middle School (BRMS) when they return to the classroom this Fall.
Eight members of Girl Scout Troop 24126 are currently working towards their Bronze Award by painting inspiring quotes on the walls of bathrooms and locker rooms of BRMS.
The Bronze Award is the highest honor that Girl Scout Juniors can achieve can achieve in fourth and fifth grades and is focused on leadership development, community service, and personal growth. It also is a way to inspire and empower them to take action and make a difference in their communities. Girls Scouts work together to earn the Bronze Award to identify community needs, collaborate with team members, create a plan, and implement a project that has a positive and lasting impact on their community. The Bronze Award requires 20 hours of service from each girl, and Troop members are eligible to earn the award before entering middle school. The 8 Troop 24126 members who are participating in the quote-painting project are soon-to-be rising 6th graders who will be starting at BRMS in September.
The girls' idea for the project stemmed from a former Girl Scout, who earned her Silver Award five years ago by painting quotes in the bathrooms and locker rooms of BRMS and who is a cousin of one of the Troop 24126 members. The eight girls decided to give the paint a needed touch-up as well as add two additional quotes to the walls for their Bronze Award.
The Troop 24126 Girl Scouts spent the week of July 15 in the brutal heat working on the project, according to Cristy Ortu, a teacher at BRMS who is also co-leader of the Troop, along with Lisa Dressel. While the physical work took place last week, the girls started to plan and fundraise for the project months ago. Fitting, as the Troop 24126 motto is "24126: Not a problem we can't fix!"
"Our goal is to uplift other girls by giving them positive messages to read," said the eight Girl Scouts working on the project. "Even though it's really hot in the school and we're spending a lot of our summer here, painting is fun and we feel proud to be part of this."
