    Local nursing homes report COVID cases

    Amid a massive decline in COVID-19 in nursing homes since vaccines became available, some local facilities are reporting active cases of the disease. The two Good Samaritan Society facilities in Brainerd both had positive cases as of Tuesday, Aug. 31, according to a statement from Executive Director Mike Deuth. Two residents in the Bethany facility were positive, along with four staff members and one resident in the Woodland facility. Also Tuesday, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby announced it would restrict visitors once again in response to a positive test in a Care Center resident. Read more

    2021 hottest summer on record in Brainerd

    2020 will stick in people’s memories for a number of reasons, but it likely won’t be for its summer heat as this year swiftly wiped it from the record books. The National Weather Service in Duluth reported the meteorological summer of 2021 — June 1 through Aug. 31 — is the hottest on record for both Brainerd and Duluth. The record is determined by the mean average temperature, taking into account the highs and lows for each day and averaging that across the three-month stretch. For Brainerd, summer 2021’s mean average was 71.3 degrees, just slightly higher than the 71.1 degrees recorded in 2020. Read more
