Proposed law targets retail theft sprees as organized crime
COLUMBUS — Ohio is looking at treating escalating and increasingly violent retail theft sprees as organized crime with a statewide law enforcement task force and stronger criminal penalties. Now in the Senate, a House-passed bill would create the task force to collaborate with the state attorney general's office and the Ohio Organized Crime Commission to assist law enforcement and prosecutors and to share information in real time across jurisdictions. “[Organized retail crime] causes billions of dollars in losses annually,” Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R., Perrysburg), sponsor of House Bill 366, told his House colleagues. “ORC involves planned large-scale operations targeting retailers across multiple jurisdictions. The National Retail Federation survey shows a 67 percent increase in organized retail crime incidents reported by loss prevention executives.” “ORC disrupts businesses, and it also jeopardizes the safety of consumers and employees,” he said. “Many retailers across Ohio have reduced operating hours or they have closed their stores in some instances due to increased criminal activity. The primary concern in doing so is the escalation of violence associated with these ORC activities.”

Welcome To Summer In Ohio!
WILMINGTON – It’s an old, old cliche, but one that bears repeating: If you don’t like the weather in Ohio, stick around for 15 minutes. It’s bound to change. The National Weather Service in Wilmington would likely agree as it predicts that several rounds of showers and storms are likely to move across Central Ohio through Friday. Some locally heavy rain and gusty winds will be the primary threats with these storms and repeated rounds of heavy rain may lead to localized flooding.

Ohio Democratic Party launches hotline for voters' questions
With less than 100 days until the November general election, a new campaign is trying to help answer questions voters may have before they head to the polls. The Ohio Democratic Party’s Organizing for Ohio Coordinate Campaign has launched a new hotline to answer questions residents may have about registering to vote and requesting an absentee ballot. They will also respond to concerns regarding polling locations. “The Organizing for Ohio Coordinated Campaign is fighting to make sure the voices of all Ohioans are heard on Election Day,” Mariah Gould, the director of the campaign, wrote in a statement. “We already have an unprecedented grassroots operation on the ground engaging with voters in communities across Ohio, and the voter assistance hotline is a critical tool to make sure Ohioans have the support they need before casting their vote this fall.” Ohio voters can reach the hotline by calling 844-644-8683, or 844-OHI-VOTE. The hotline is available 24 hours a day.
