Police are investigating after a shooting in Minneapolis’ Phillips neighborhood left one man dead Thursday afternoon.

The Minneapolis Police Department says it responded to a report of a shooting on the 2900 block of 12th Avenue South just before 2 p.m.

At the scene, officers found a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics responded, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

MPD Chief Brian O’Hara stated that the victim had been with a group and became involved in an altercation that escalated into a shooting.

MPD has not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.

“This is the first murder of the month of August,” O’Hara said in a statement.

“It’s difficult because it’s happened in broad daylight on a weekday afternoon and now there’s another family that’s here and is being torn apart by gun violence.”

There have been 41 homicides in Minneapolis so far this year, which is equal to the same date in 2023.
