A 70-year-old man was left with severe injuries following an ATV crash in northern Minnesota on Tuesday.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 5:30 p.m. of an ATV that had flipped and whose driver was unconscious. The crash happened on the 2500 block of County Road 4 in Mahtowa Township.

The 70-year-old driver from Carlton lost control of the ATV while exiting a gravel driveway onto the pavement of County Road 4, police say.

He sustained significant injuries as a result of the accident, with the ATV lying on top of him when he was found. Paramedics took him by air ambulance to a Duluth area hospital.

The driver was not wearing a helmet, the sheriff's office says. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
