Fire crews continue battling Pyramid Fire near Sweet Home
SWEET HOME, Ore. – Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire that is burning more than 500 acres of woodland east of Sweet Home. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Pyramid Fire was first reported in the afternoon of July 17, after several lightning strikes hit across Oregon. USFS officials said that as of July 22, the fire is burning 535 acres in an old-growth forest that has no recent history of fire. The fire’s location in steep, rugged and inaccessible terrain, and crews have been working on improving existing forest and overgrown roads in the area, which the USFS said should help prevent the fire from spreading south towards the Middle Santiam Wilderness, private timberlands, and nearby communities.
Woodburn resident arrested following fatal freeway crash
Oregon State Police reported that a Woodburn resident was arrested following a fatal crash that took place on I-5 in Linn County south of Albany early Sunday morning. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that at around 2:09 a.m. Sunday, July 21, Isael Garcia, 23, of Woodburn was travelling northbound in a Lexus GS when the vehicle rear-ended a northbound Toyota Camry operated by Justin Michael Palmer, 37, of La Center, Wash. Palmer suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. A passenger in his vehicle, Scott Alan Palmer, 53, of Camarillo, Calif., was declared deceased at the scene. Garcia suffered minor injuries and after being medically cleared was arrested for DUII. The freeway was impacted for about six hours during the on-scene investigation. The investigation is on-going. OSP was assisted by the Linn County Sheriff's Office and ODOT.
Body of ‘Top Chef’ alum Naomi Pomeroy recovered from Oregon river after tubing accident
The body of celebrity chef and “Top Chef” alum Naomi Pomeroy has been recovered from a river in western Oregon, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said Pomeroy’s body was located Wednesday morning in the Willamette River about half a mile upstream of Hyak Park between Corvallis and Albany, Oregon.
