A 16-year-old was killed in a one-vehicle crash Thursday night in Brown County, according to a media release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Serenity New of Brownwood was killed in the rollover crash, according to the DPS.

She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that happened about 8:15 p.m. five miles south of Brownwood on County Road 225. She was a passenger in an SUV.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Toyota 4Runner was traveling south on CR 225, according to the DPS. The driver of the SUV, another 16-year-old girl, was operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed unsafe for the roadway conditions.

The driver lost control of the SUV, causing it to go into a side skid off the east side of the road. The SUV overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on its wheels.

The posted speed limit was 60 mph. The weather was clear, and the roadway was dry.

The driver and another passenger in the vehicle, Neely Hope Mullins, 17 of Brownwood, suffered non-incapacitating injuries. Mullins was transported to Hendrick Medical Center in Brownwood for treatment.

The 16-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m. Thursday by Brown County Justice of the Peace Mitchell Jacobson.

All three teenagers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to the DPS.

Troopers from the Texas Highway Patrol in Brownwood and Comanche and a deputy with the Brown County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash.
