Multiple people have posted on Facebook about seeing bears in Upper Black Eddy this week, near Ringing Rocks Family Campground and Colonial Woods Family Camping Resort.

A bear cub was spotted Tuesday evening on Marienstein Road between Lake Warren and Lonely Cottage roads, about a mile from each campground. A black bear cub and an adult were seen in the same area, on Woodland Drive, on Sunday. Someone else spotted a bear on nearby Lonely Cottage Road the same night.

Black bears are most active at dusk and dawn, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Improper food storage is a major cause of human-bear conflicts while camping, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club. Keeping a clean campsite with distance between cooking and sleeping areas is critical, the club says. Any leftover food or odors in a tent could attract a bear — even toothpaste.

The National Park Service recommends clearing and securing all garbage and food waste immediately, including dirty dishes, and to keep your car clear of crumbs, wrappers or scented toiletries.

The NPS also advises against storing food in tents or backpacks, and against burning food waste in a campfire, as it rarely gets hot enough to be effective.
