Illinois dam fails, residents told to evacuate area
Thunderstorms with heavy rains and tornadoes rattled the Chicago area and elsewhere in the Midwest, overtopping a dam Tuesday in southern Illinois, cutting power to hundreds of thousands, and even sending weather forecasters scrambling for safety. Investigators did not violate rights in college gambling probe, state says in filing
Attorneys for the state have filed to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the investigation that roiled Iowa collegiate athletic programs and resulted in multiple criminal charges. More than 20 people, mostly student athletes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, were accused last year of underage gambling and identity theft, the latter for allegedly using other peoples' online gambling accounts to place wagers on athletic events. Nineteen pleaded guilty and were fined $645 for underage gambling, while six more had their charges dismissed.
German American Heritage Center & Museum named Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area site
The German American Heritage Center & Museum has another historical distinction to add to its lengthy accolades. The center in Davenport has received official designation as a Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) site. Representatives from the German American Heritage Center & Museum, Silos & Smokestacks, Senator Ernst’s office, Iowa Travel Industry Partners and various heritage area sites and partners were present to commemorate the event.

For 2024, the Davenport venue will host performances by eight local and national jazz acts: Chicago Cellar Boys; El Dorado Jazz Band; Graystone Monarchs; Mike Davis' New Wonders; Paul Asaro & His Rhythm; T.J. Muller's Jazz-O-Maniacs; The Dooley Band; and the Bix Youth Jazz Band.
