Bills Reveal Main Aspect Where Josh Allen Needs To Improve

Quarterback Josh Allen has as great of a highlight reel as any NFL signal caller. But Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said Allen is working this summer on not feeling compelled to make a highlight reel play on every snap.

Brady explained while appearing on the "Centered on Buffalo" podcast that making "routine plays routinely" and "continuing to master" the offensive playbook is what Allen is focused on most this summer.

“Josh is a great quarterback, but just wanting to see his thirst to get better,” said Brady. “When you show him clips that ‘Hey, you might have made an incredible play right here but you didn’t have to make an incredible play. How can we make it easier for you? You can make plays that nobody else in the world can do, but we don’t need you to do it every snap.’”

Allen has possessed this flaw since he made his NFL debut in 2018, and it's widely recognized around the league.

With input from NFL executives, coaches and scouts, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler ranked Allen No. 3 on his 2024 offseason quarterback rankings. But Allen was a polarizing figure among the league insiders Fowler spoke with for the rankings.

One insider ranked Allen the top quarterback in the league while another didn't have him rated in the top five.

"One of the more overrated players in the NFL," a veteran NFL executive told Fowler . "Immense talent but he makes a lot of mistakes. He's underdeveloped at winning at the line of scrimmage, tends to lock on to targets, more of a thrower than precision passer, forces throws into traffic."

To be a consensus top quarterback in the league, Allen will have to follow Brady's direction to not play hero on every snap.
