The man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump was a loner who was bullied in school for numerous things, including wearing hunting clothes, according to a classmate.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot dead by Trump's protection officers moments after opening fire at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Crooks was positioned 130 meters from the Republican on a barn roof.

Classmate Jason Kohler, 21, told NBC "loner" Crooks was often isolated and subject to bullying during his time in high school.

He was known for wearing hunting outfits and faced ridicule for his choice of clothing, often sitting alone during lunch.

The shooter graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 and was recognized as one of over a dozen students to receive a National Math and Science Initiative Star Award, as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Michael Dudjak, 20, attended the same school as Crooks for most of his life and has also described him as quiet.

Dudjak also mentioned that Crooks was not outspoken about politics and wasn't very active on social media.

The FBI continues its thorough investigation to determine his motives and background.

It is believed that he used an AR-style rifle to target Trump, which officers recovered.

Crooks is from Bethel Park, a small village in Pennsylvania around 40 miles from the Butler rally.

Based on state voting records, Crooks was a registered Republican voter.

When Dudjak learned that Crooks was the shooter, he and his friends from high school were shocked and couldn't believe the news.

Dudjak expressed his disbelief, saying to NBC: "It's definitely terrifying for someone you went to school with to commit such a heinous act ... that's the craziest thing about it when it entered my brain. You were in the same class as this person two years ago."
