The attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Saturday in Pennsylvania has propelled a 21-year-old hip-hop song into the 'top 10' on US iTunes. During a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump's ear was '' grazed '' by a bullet fired by a would-be assassin.

The gunman, named as 20-year-old lone wolf Thomas Matthew Crooks , was shot dead by law enforcement agents on a roof more than 130 yards away, where his body was later seen covered in blood. Trump was treated at a hospital before being discharged and flying back to New Jersey that evening.

Trump's ordeal is considered by some to mirror shooting incidents involving US rapper 50 Cent , real name Curtis Jackson. Jackson was shot on May 24, 2000. He was struck by nine bullets in front of his grandmother's house in South Jamaica, Queens , New York City . Despite the severity of his injuries, he survived and went on to have a successful career in music and business.

In his 2003 song, Many Men (Wish Death), from the successful Get Rich or Die Tryin' album, 50 Cent details his near-death experiences - particularly the 2000 shootings - and navigating life with what he sees as a price on his head.

Meanwhile, Trump has stated " I should be dead " after surviving an assassination attempt during a rally. At the Butler, Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, the former president and hopeful candidate for 2024 was targeted with a shot that brushed his ear.

This violent act resulted in two people's deaths, including the would-be assassin, Crooks , identified by the FBI. Discussing the incident in his first interview after the horrifying event, Trump expressed that the shooter might have succeeded if he hadn't turned towards a screen briefly, precisely when the bullet was fired.

Trump said: "I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that at that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?"

Trump had been looking at statistics about illegal immigration on the screen when the bullet grazed his ear. Following this, he promptly ducked for cover, and security personnel quickly subdued the danger to use the authority's term, 'neutralized' it.
