Investigators continue to dig into the life of Thomas Matthew Crooks , the suspect who tried to assassinate Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (July 13), as they tried to find a motive for the attack.

Crooks was shot and killed by snipers after shooting Trump from a rooftop while he was speaking. One of the bullets grazed Trump's ear as he dropped to the ground.

One rallygoer was killed, and two others were critically injured in the shooting.

The FBI has taken over the investigation and interviewed around 100 people, including rally attendees and members of law enforcement who were present.

They have also gained access to Crooks's phone, though it provided no details about a motive , according to NBC News .

Investigators searched the Crooks family home and recovered over a dozen guns.

According to CNN , Crooks went to Home Depot and purchased a five-foot ladder just hours before the rally on Saturday. He then went to a gun store to buy ammunition before heading to the rally.

Several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the ATF, have reached out to Josh Rowe , the owner of Allegheny Arms and Gun Works, which is one of the places where Crooks purchased ammunition. It is a six-minute drive from his home.

"As a responsible member of our community, it is our prerogative to cooperate with law enforcement in every way," the gun store said in a statement. "Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and that of those affected, we will not make any further statements."
