A fundraiser has been set up to help pay for the medical bills of a man who was shot at a campground at Lake Allatoona.

Maurice Winsell was at the Sweetwater Campground Day Use Area on Fields Chapel Road near Canton on June 16 when he was shot and seriously injured.

Gregory Eugene Hall has been arrested on charges connected to the shooting. According to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, the two men did not know each other.

According to Melissa Murner and Dana Champion, who established a fundraiser on his behalf, Winsell was at the lake celebrating Father’s Day when a confrontation occurred and Hall shot him three times.

The fundraiser was set up by Dana Champion and Melissa Murner.

“He was rushed to the hospital and after multiple successful surgeries, has now been moved from ICU to a standard hospital room,” the GoFundMe fundraising page reads in part. “Maurice has fought hard to survive this unwarranted assault, but his fight to regain control of his normal life will take many months.”

Winsell, who has a full-time contracting job and works as an actor, won’t be able to work while he recovers.

“He does not have short or long-term disability, nor does he have health insurance,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Any donations for Maurice and Melissa’s critical time of financial need is very much appreciated!”

Hall is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He remains in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center without bond.
