Suspect in custody after standoff with Fort Worth police closes highways

FORT WORTH — The suspect at the center of a police chase and standoff is in custody.

The chase unfolded around 7 p.m. Thursday when Fort Worth police attempted a traffic stop. The suspect didn't stop and started throwing drugs outside of the vehicle, police said.

The pursuit went on for some time, according to the Fort Worth Police Department, and ended at the highway interchange, where all traffic in the general area was shut down.

Police then attempted to negotiate with the suspect to surrender.

I-35W northbound and southbound and Northeast Loop 820 westbound and eastbound were closed, Fort Worth police said. Cars were seen on TxDOT cameras reversing on the highways and trying to exit.

MedStar and SWAT were assisting at the scene. FWPD did not release the suspect's identity.

The incident marks the second time this week a suspect stopped on a highway and refused to get out of their vehicle . A police standoff with a woman shut down a North Texas highway Sunday afternoon until a SWAT team fired tear gas into her vehicle.
