Cloudy, damp and dreary weather Thursday ahead of Debby's arrival in Philadelphia area 03:52

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Thursday will be similar to Wednesday, with scattered showers, cloudy skies and unseasonably cool temperatures before Tropical Storm Debby brings heavy rain and wind to the region Friday.

A few rumbles of thunder aren't out of the question today, either. While it's not a washout, it's definitely not a day to head down to the beach.

Forecast for Aug. 8, 2024 CBS Philadelphia

With that forecast out of the way, let's talk about Debby — or what's left of it — arriving in the Philadelphia area Friday.

Models are coming to a better agreement that Debby will be picked up by another advancing trough and lifted into the northeast by Friday night, completely exiting our area by 11 p.m. Friday.

A NEXT Weather Alert has been issued for Friday due to this storm.

While the center of Debby's circulation and the heaviest rain will likely ride up the spine of the Appalachian range and stay just to our west, we can expect a band of heavy thunderstorms to pass over Philadelphia on Friday.

Debby in Philadelphia: breaking down risks

With tropical moisture in place, these storms will once again bring the threat of flooding rain, with the highest amounts likely in the northwest portion of our region.

We're looking at totals around half an inch to an inch of rainfall, possibly up to two inches — and anywhere that sees a heavier downpour could see totals exceeding that.

    Debby's path forecast CBS Philadelphia

We have a slight risk of flash flooding around the city and suburbs.

Winds will pick up on Friday as well as Debby moves by, with gusts to 30-40 mph.

The region is under a marginal risk for severe weather for now, though that risk may be updated. There is a slight risk of a tornado, with the outer bands of Debby potentially having enough rottation to spawn brief and isolated tornadoes — something we'll be monitoring closely Friday afternoon.

Flash flood risk Friday CBS Philadelphia

Our area also faces flash flood risks, even though the heaviest rain falls far to the west of Philadelphia.

Remember, do not drive through flooded roads. Turn around and don't drown ! It only takes a few inches of water to stall a car, and anything higher risks floating your vehicle.

Wonderful weekend weather around Philadelphia after Debby moves out

The NEXT Weather team has removed the Weather Alert for the weekend as sunshine and lower humidity will be in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday after Debby leaves the Philadelphia area.

As always, the NEXT Weather Team will keep you posted with constant updates throughout this busy week.
