No news is often good news during fall football practice, but Texas football was on the wrong end of that equation to open fall camp. Star running back CJ Baxter suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice, reportedly tearing his PCL and LCL in his right knee. The injury happened during the sixth practice of Texas football fall camp, so head coach Steve Sarkisian has to drill down a new Texas football running back depth chart before the season begins. The Longhorns have two live scrimmages over the next 10 days, providing valuable reps for the backup running backs.
Horns247 has two of the most experienced journalists in the Texas market in Chip Brown and Jeff Howe. They have broken countless stories over the last two decades. Newcomer Eric Henry has already made his presence felt in the market, and Hank South and Jordan Scruggs have Longhorns recruiting on lockdown. The top Texas football headline from fall camp is CJ Baxter's season-ending injury. He averaged nearly five yards per carry as a freshman last season, while also catching 24 passes for 156 yards. Baxter played a crucial role in pass protection for quarterback Quinn Ewers , who was sacked 28 times last season (second-most in Big 12).
The Longhorns will now rely heavily on junior running back Jaydon Blue , who finished with 398 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 65 carries in 2023. Blue's primary backup has yet to be established, but sophomore Quintrevion Wisner , freshman Christian Clark and freshman Jerrick Gibson are all trying to move up the Texas football depth chart. Wisner had 12 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown in a limited role last year, giving him an edge over the freshmen on the roster. Another one of the Texas football headlines surrounds the Longhorns tight ends. They are replacing their top tight end from last season, as Ja'Tavion Sanders is now in the NFL after catching 45 passes for 682 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tight end Gunnar Helm had 14 receptions for 192 yards and two scores of his own, and he is hoping to take a step forward this season.
However, he is competing with Alabama transfer Amari Niblack for playing time. Niblack caught 20 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns for the Crimson Tide last season, bringing valuable experience and talent to Austin. Senior Juan Davis has reportedly been making noise in fall practice as well, despite being a special teams player at Texas over the last three years. There are also two young tight ends on the roster, so the depth chart will come into view throughout fall camp. Find out more about Texas' tight ends at Horns247 .
