Alabama football camp is in full swing as the Crimson Tide head into their first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer. The former Washington coach is trying to drill down starters at multiple positions, so Alabama football fall camp is crucial for the coaching staff. Alabama debuted at No. 5 in the preseason Coaches Poll, the school's lowest preseason ranking since 2009. The Crimson Tide will open the campaign against unranked Western Kentucky in Tuscaloosa on August 31.
One position on the Alabama football depth chart that is not up for debate is quarterback, as Jalen Milroe returns as the clear starter atop the Alabama football roster. He threw for 2,834 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions last year and will look for an even stronger season under his new offensive-minded coaching staff. If you want to see the latest Alabama football camp news, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at Bama247, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Alabama .
The team of insiders at Bama247 are providing on-the-ground updates on every development in fall camp, including insights from Matt Zenitz, John Talty and Mike Rodak, who have more than 25 years of experience covering the Crimson Tide. The trio has deep-rooted ties inside and around the Alabama community, and Talty wrote The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban, a Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly bestseller.
Alabama lost its top two running backs from last season, as Jase McCellan left for the NFL and Roydell Williams entered the college football transfer portal. Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan still has plenty of talent to work with heading into the 2024 season, though, as Justice Haynes and Jam Miller could form one of the conference's best duos. Haynes rushed 25 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns during his freshman season, while Miller had 41 carries for 201 yards and a score as a sophomore.
They are currently sitting atop the Alabama football depth chart, but the title of "starter" has not been drilled down yet. Freshmen Richard Young and Daniel Hill are both competing for playing time as well, making this an important fall camp for Alabama's running back room. The Crimson Tide are known for producing strong running backs, so all four of those players are worth keeping tabs on before the season begins. Another one of the Alabama football headlines surrounds the Crimson Tide's linebackers. Alabama should have two of the best inside linebackers in the SEC this season, as Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell are back after playing key roles last year. Lawson started all 11 games he played, while Campbell made eight starts and appeared in 13 contests.
There is not much experience on the depth chart behind those players, so the Crimson Tide will hope they can stay healthy. As for the outside linebackers, there is not an established starter for the Wolf position in defensive coordinator Kane Wommack's scheme. Quandarrius Robinson, Keanu Koht, Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre are all contenders, which is something that the Bama247 team is keeping a close eye on during fall camp.
