Fresh off a College Football Playoff appearance and now playing in the SEC, the Texas Longhorns will be one of the most scrutinized football programs in the nation in 2024. Their quarterback room only adds to the intrigue as Texas football camp rolls on. Texas features a Heisman Trophy contender in Quinn Ewers, while his backup, Arch Manning, has one of the most recognizable last names in the football world. Texas, however, is dealing with adversity as starting running back C.J. Baxter went down with a season-ending knee injury in preseason practice.
Horns247 has two of the most experienced journalists in the Texas market in Chip Brown and Jeff Howe. They have broken countless stories over the last two decades. Newcomer Eric Henry has already made his presence felt in the market, and Hank South and Jordan Scruggs have Longhorns recruiting on lockdown. The top Texas football headline from fall camp is CJ Baxter's season-ending injury. The sophomore not only played a pivotal role as a runner last year, but he was also developing into a key blocker in pass protection and caught 24 passes out of the backfield. Texas gave up the second-most sacks in the Big 12 last season (28), and it could be even more difficult to keep Quinn Ewers on his feet following Baxter's injury.
Blue is now the clear choice to be the RB1 on the Texas football depth chart heading into the season after averaging 6.1 yards per carry and 9.6 yards per reception last year. Sophomore Quintrevion Wisner played a limited role last season, while Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson are freshmen battling for playing time. The Longhorns will need to establish their new depth chart in fall camp, and Horns247 is on site for practices. Get more updates on the Texas running back competition at Horns247 .
Another one of the Texas football headlines surrounds the Longhorns tight ends. Ja'Tavion Sanders was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after recording a combined 99 catches for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns during his sophomore and junior seasons in Austin. Sarkisian uses a lot of two-tight end sets, so this will be an important spot to watch in camp.
Alabama transfer Amari Niblack, who had 327 yards of receiving for the Tide last year, is the favorite to be the starter. "It's easy to project that Niblack would assume Sanders' role as an athletic tight end whose speed and size will create mismatches against opposing secondaries," Howe said. Seniors Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis are also competing for snaps at this spot. Find out more about Texas' tight ends at Horns247 .
