Texas football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, new depth chart with no CJ Baxter by Longhorns insiders

The Texas Longhorns are entering their first season in the SEC following their College Football Playoff appearance last season. Quarterback Quinn Ewers is back for a third season, but Texas lost its top three wide receivers, its All-Big 12 tight end, and its leading rusher. Texas football suffered another blow when running backs CJ Baxter and Christian Clark suffered season-ending injuries in fall camp. The Texas football depth chart is going to look drastically different than it did last year, as head coach Steve Sarkisian sorts through new and returning talent during Texas football fall practice.
Horns247 has two of the most experienced journalists in the Texas market in Chip Brown and Jeff Howe. They have broken countless stories over the last two decades. Newcomer Eric Henry has already made his presence felt in the market, and Hank South and Jordan Scruggs have Longhorns recruiting on lockdown. The top Texas football headline from fall camp is CJ Baxter's season-ending injury, followed by Christian Clark going down. Sarkisian has produced a 1,000-yard rusher in all nine of his full seasons as a college head coach and play-caller, dating back to his stints with Washington and USC. Baxter was in line to become the next 1,000-yard rusher for Sarkisian after averaging 4.8 yards per carry with five touchdowns last season.
Junior Jaydon Blue now steps into the RB1 role as a proven player, but the depth chart behind him is murky. Sophomore Quintrevion Wisner joins freshman Jerrick Gibson as the players competing for the backup role behind Blue. Wisner's experience gives him an early edge, but the Horns247 team will be tracking the running back competition throughout fall camp. Another one of the Texas football headlines surrounds the Longhorns tight ends. Ja'Tavion Sanders was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after recording a combined 99 catches for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns during his sophomore and junior seasons in Austin. Sarkisian uses a lot of two-tight end sets, so this will be an important spot to watch in camp.
Alabama transfer Amari Niblack, who had 327 yards of receiving for the Tide last year, is the favorite to be the starter. "It's easy to project that Niblack would assume Sanders' role as an athletic tight end whose speed and size will create mismatches against opposing secondaries," Howe said. Seniors Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis are also competing for snaps at this spot. Find out more about Texas' tight ends at Horns247 .
