It has been a dozen years since the Texas A&M Aggies notched double-digit wins, a drought the program is looking to end in its first year under new head coach Mike Elko. The former Aggies assistant and Duke head coach loaded up the 2024 Texas A&M football roster with transfers, with 28 players from the college football transfer portal, to go along with 17 incoming freshmen recruits. Overall, Aggies football ranks 16th in the nation in the Class of 2024 rankings, per 247Sports, but just ninth in the now 16-team SEC.

Fortunately, Elko has talented holdovers to work with as he crafts the 2024 Texas A&M depth chart. That includes quarterback Conner Weigman, a former five-star whose presence could help mitigate the loss of running back Rueben Owens for the year. However, Weigman needs to stay healthy after playing in just four games a year ago, so who emerges as his backup will be a key storyline to monitor during Texas A&M football camp. Top Texas A&M Aggies practice storylines

The top Texas A&M football headline from fall camp is the season-ending injury to Rueben Owens. The No. 2 running back in the Class of 2023, Owens led all SEC freshmen in rushing yards last year en route to earning SEC All-Freshman honors. He ranked third on the team with 385 yards on the ground, and fortunately for Aggies fans, the team's top two rushers will return, Amari Daniels (532 yards) and Le'Veon Moss (484 yards).

The Aggies have a commitment from Class of 2025 four-star prospect Deondrae Riden, but they could rely on the son of the NFL's rushing king to help bridge the gap until then. EJ Smith, son of Emmitt Smith, joins A&M after transferring from Stanford as the Dallas native returns to Texas. He figures to be an asset in the passing game after notching 33 receptions a year ago, compared to Daniels and Moss combining for just 25 catches. Find out who is standing out in camp at GigEm247 .

Another storyline for Texas A&M football camp is the impact that the college football transfer portal will have on this roster. Dating back to Fisher's time, Texas A&M has been one of the most active programs in the nation in the portal. The Aggies lost 31 players following last season, but added 28.

"Most of that group also were upperclassmen which means that they should be more physically mature than underclassmen who might have been considered to be more talented coming out of high school," Tarpley said. However, A&M must also find replacements for big names such as receiver Evan Stewart and defensive lineman Walter Nolen, who headed to Oregon and Ole Miss, respectively.
