    Rising Sun tops Elkton to reach state playoffs

    NORTH EAST — Rising Sun will make another appearance in the 2A state playoffs after knocking off No. 2 Elkton with a 10-0 win on Thursday. The Tigers are the two-seed in the state tournament and will face No. 7 Hereford at 4 p.m. on Friday.

    Rising Sun jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings. Jordan Lynch led things off with a lead-off home run, plus a two-run single from Aubrey McCoy to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage. An RBI single from Josalyn McMillan, an RBI from Bri Cole and a wild pitch helped Sun grow its lead to six in the second inning. McCoy drove in her second run of the game in the fifth on a single to grow the Tigers' advantage to seven. Rising Sun ended things in the sixth, driving in two more runs.

    McCoy went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs. Lynch drove in two runs.

    Sun's Taylor Stapleford pitched a complete game for Rising Sun, striking out 11 hitters and allowing two hits. Elkton's Maddie Holmes and Madison Wright each finished with a hit for the Golden Elks.

    Elkton finishes the season with an overall record of 16-3, the second best record in the county. The Golden Elks' season included a 13-game winning streak that stretched from the end of March to the end of April.
