    North East mixed doubles team qualifies for tennis states

    CAMBRIDGE — For the third straight year, North East’s mixed doubles team of Katy Hammer and Greg Kosinski will make an appearance in the MPSSAA Tennis State Championships.

    The North East seniors were crowned region championships in 2A East action after knocking off Queen Anne’s Marylee Kline and Nicolas Esper in straight sets. Kosinski and Hammer won the first set 6-3, followed by a 7-5 win in the tournament-deciding set. The mixed doubles team worked its way through the region tournament with straight set wins in the quarterfinals over Kent Island’s Taylor Harding and Matt Guerra. Kosinski and Hammer advanced to the finals with wins of 6-0, 6-0 against Elkton’s mixed doubles team.

    The state championships will be held at Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia. Quarterfinal and semifinal action for Class 2A will take place on Friday. The state final matches will happen on Saturday.

    Alongside Hammer and Kosinski, three doubles teams reached the region finals across the respective brackets. In Class 2A, North East’s Gavin Hawley and Alex Tadalan made an appearance in the region championship. The pair fell to North Caroline’s Joshua Huster and Jesse Link in straight sets of 6-1, 6-4. After receiving a quarterfinals bye, Hawley and Tadalan reached the region final with straight set wins of 6-0, 6-2 over Kent Island’s Dylan Bankard and Jake McAuley.

    Rising Sun’s girls’ doubles team of Sara Wray and Rebecca Taylor reached the region finals with back-to-back victories. Wray and Taylor won in straight sets of 6-1, 6-3 in the quarters to advance to the region semifinals. After winning a tiebreaker in their first set against North Caroline’s Izzy Greeno and Riley Belote, Wray and Taylor won the second set 6-0 to reach the region final. Rising Sun’s doubles team fell to Queen Anne’s Lucy Taylor and Meg Taylor in straight sets of 6-0, 6-1.

    In Class 1A, Perryville’s Brunson VanNoy and Brandon Kazor reached the doorstep of the state tournament. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, the boys’ doubles duo won its semifinals match against Colonel Richardson’s Jeffery Lin and Brayden Welzel in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2. VanNoy and Kazor fell to Miles Fox and Cooper Baum of St. Michael’s in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0.

    Bohemia Manor’s Andrew Hemelt reached the boys’ singles region finals in the 1A East bracket with semifinal wins of 6-1, 6-2 over Colonel Richardson’s Issac Uva. Hemelt received a bye in the quarterfinal round. St. Michael’s Tom Weller defeated Hemelt in the region finals match with straight set wins of 6-0, 6-0.
