REPORT: Man claims fentanyl, woman claims meth in traffic stop search

Polk County Police charged two early on Monday morning with drug possession following a traffic stop in Cedartown, according to reports.

David Joseph Richards, 40, and Stepahnie Marie Haywood, 41, both of Cedartown area addresses, were booked into custody on Monday morning after 3 a.m. when the pair were arrested during a traffic stop at West Queen and North Main Street around 1:30 a.m.

Polk County Police were behind the pair when they were driving on Main Street in a Honda Ridgeline and stayed behind it as it turned fast onto West Ware Street, then failed to fully stop at the intersection with South College Street. The truck then did the same thing at the intersection with College and Wissahickon Avenue, so the officer decided to stop the vehicle and see what was going on.

When stopped, Richards behind the wheel told police he didn’t have his license on him. The pair explained they were headed to Waffle House, which confused officers since they weren’t heading in the right direction for an early morning meal. Another officer on scene learned this, and also claimed to smell marijuana coming from inside the car.

The officer’s nose was right as Haywood was found to have marijuana inside of her purse. A further search of the vehicle turned up three grams of fentanyl, a glass pipe with suspected meth residue inside, and a scale in the center console.

Haywood and Richards were placed in cuffs, read Miranda and got a chance to speak to officers about who was responsible for what drugs in the vehicle.

Richards took responsibility for the fentanyl and scale, while Haywood took charge of the meth pipe and suspected meth residue contained within.

Both were taken to the Polk County Jail without incident. The truck was towed away.

Richards was charged with felonies for possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance and possession of tools for the commission of a crime and was being held without bond set as of this posting in custody at the jail.

Haywood was only being held for possession of tools for the commission of a crime as of this posting – a misdemeanor charge – and had no bond set as of this posting. She was previously booked and released on $3,500 bond on June 16 for a grand jury indictment.
