A child is dead and another is injured after a nasty gust of wind blew a bounce house into the air during a baseball game in Maryland on Friday night, according to local officials.

Charles County 911 dispatchers received a call at approximately 9:21 p.m. on Friday from Regency Furniture Stadium about 34 miles south of Washington, D.C., after reports that a moon bounce house had flown into the air with children still inside of it after a gust of wind.

The moon bounce house had been at the facility while the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team was playing a game, the Charles County government said in a press release. The bounce house flew "approximately 15 to 20 feet up in the air, causing children to fall before it landed on the playing field," the release stated.

EMS personnel were already at the scene for the game, it was reported, as were trainers from the baseball team and a few volunteer first responders who were in attendance. They all reportedly began patient care within minutes, but one of the children "sustained life-threatening injuries" and was transported by the Maryland State Police to a Children's National Hospital in Washington.

The boy, 5, from nearby La Plata, was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. A second child who wasn't identified sustained non-life-threatening injuries, it was reported, and was taken to the hospital by the police as well.

The Friday night game was promptly canceled, and the Saturday night game was postponed, according to a Facebook post from the baseball team, which also offered thoughts and prayers for the affected families. Counseling is being made available to support the families, players and fans who were in attendance and anyone from the community who needs it, the press release stated.

Courtney Knichel, the team's general manager, said the organization "shares [its] condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured." Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II also expressed his condolences, stating, according to the release, "We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time. We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.
