CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Wanting to avoid the crowds and do your own at-home fireworks show for the Fourth of July? Here are the rules for setting off fireworks in each Lowcountry municipality.
8 places to watch Fourth of July fireworks in the Charleston area Charleston
The sale, possession, and use of fireworks is not permitted under Charleston City Ordinance Sec. 13-191, according to the Charleston Fire Department. However, the Lowcountry has several fireworks shows for locals to attend.
North Charleston
Residents in North Charleston are allowed to set off fireworks from 9 a.m. on July 4 to 1 a.m. on July 5. However, there are some restrictions, such as shooting fireworks within 600 feet of a church, hospital, asylum, or public building. According to the city, residents can also not shoot fireworks towards another person, in a vehicle, or thrown into a building. Year-round fireworks are allowed from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Mount Pleasant
You can set off fireworks on July 3, 4, and 5 in Mount Pleasant from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The rule is that fireworks are allowed to be set off before and after a holiday in addition to the actual holiday itself.
Hanahan
This city, nestled between North Charleston and Goose Creek, only allows fireworks four days a year. July 4 is included alongside New Year’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 10:59 p.m.
Goose Creek
The Creek is similar to Hanahan, with fireworks only allowed on July 4, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.
Summerville
Summerville allows fireworks on July 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. July 5. If you discharging fireworks on private property, you must have permission from the property owner. Fireworks are also permitted on New Year’s Eve.
Moncks Corner
Only two days in Moncks Corner allow for fireworks. July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and New Year’s Eve from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. New Year’s Day.
James Island
On this island, fireworks are allowed everyday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. including July 4!
Charleston County has no rules regarding fireworks except to follow South Carolina law on discharging the exploding lights for those who live in unincorporated areas.
Unincorporated Dorchester County allows for fireworks before 10 p.m. and after 10 a.m.
The majority of the islands, including Seabrook Island , Kiawah Island , Isle of Palms , Sullivan’s Island , and Folly Beach , do not allow the sale or discharge of fireworks.
