Police say a suspect is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of a 19-year-old man Tuesday in north Charlotte.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to a homicide investigation Tuesday afternoon along North Tryon Street in University City.

The victim showed up at the hospital after being shot on Carver Boulevard, according to CMPD. The victim died at the hospital.

On Wednesday, the victim was identified as 19-year-old Marquez Alexander Summers.

According to reports, the driver who took the Summers to the hospital told police that the shooting was a $470 drug deal gone wrong.

They said he and Summers agreed to make the deal with 22-year-old Demarius Jeprese Poole in the neighborhood behind Rockwell Park.

At some point, there was a dispute regarding the money, and gunfire was exchanged.

It was later discovered that Poole was also in the hospital after being shot during the exchange.

He admitted to being at the scene of the drug exchange and shooting. He also admitted to being in possession of a gun that matched shell casings found in the area.

CMPD said Poole was in custody on unrelated charges when detectives got arrest warrants for murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

According to jail records, Poole was initially arrested for failure to appear on charges of larceny last November.

Poole is being held in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center with no bond.
