Panthers HC gives a concerning update on Bryce Young at the start of training camp

The 2024 season is about seeing incremental success for second-year signal caller Bryce Young.

Through the offseason, the Carolina Panthers restructured the offense, adding Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. Dan Morgan also added wide receivers , Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette.

However, through the first few days of practice, Young hasn't found a consistent groove alongside the new additions. On Thursday, Dave Canales described Young as too "streaky" throughout practice. That isn't what the Panthers were hoping for.

"We can't be streaky," Canales said . "We got to be consistent. He's looking at those couple of plays where he didn't quite execute it the right way. He's looking for consistent performance throughout the entire practice."

Hot and cold streaks are typical for the start of training camp. However, with Young, it carries more weight. His struggles will be under a microscope due to his pedestrian rookie season which saw him complete 59.8 percent of his pass attempts for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

With the additions on the offense, Canales' focus on getting the ball out of Young's hands quickly, and the emphasis on the running game, a streaky practice won't determine Young's aspirations heading into the 2024 season. Still, it is concerning when accounting for the amount of money the Panthers have spent on improving the offense around him.

"It's going to take more time, more reps, more conversations and that's definitely a big point of emphasis for me throughout this training camp," Young said. "It's my job to adjust to that and to make sure that I'm able to have the same timing and to get the ball out early."
