    CT driver arrested after leading police on chase through Massachusetts

    SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – A man from Connecticut was arrested in Southbridge after striking several cruisers while leading police on a chase.

    According to the Charlton Police Department, a man driving a stolen vehicle was allegedly involved in an incident in Connecticut where a police cruiser and a civilian vehicle were intentionally struck. The vehicle, a blue sedan with significant damage, was traveling west on Route 20 in the Eastern Hampden County and Southwestern Worcester County area.

    Officers in Holland saw the suspected vehicle traveling in the area of 164 Mashapaug Road and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver continued onto Sturbridge Road and Leno Road, before crossing into Sturbridge.

    At around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Massachusetts State Police notified Charlton officers of numerous unsuccessful attempts and the driver was possibly in possession of a firearm. The Charlton Police saw the vehicle traveling east on Route 20 and when the driver saw them, he crossed the double solid lines on Route 20 (Sturbridge Road) delineating east and west traffic and traveled along the Route 20 corridor and adjacent intersecting streets.

    Police pursued the vehicle in an attempt to stop it however, the vehicle crashed into a cruiser and continued driving. The vehicle came to a stop on Torrey Road in Sturbridge and the driver, 31-year-old Nicholas Newton of Connecticut, was arrested by Charlton Police.

    Newton was in narcotics and had warrants for his arrest in both Connecticut and Florida. He was taken to the hospital and will be arraigned on the following charges:

    • Failure to stop for police
    • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
    • Fugitive from Justice
    • Receiving stolen property +$1200
    • Wanton destruction of property +$1200
    • Possession of a Class A Substance

    Additional charges are pending, Holland Police will be charging Newton with multiple civil and criminal charges including failing to stop for police.
