One dead after overnight shooting in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a man is dead after an overnight shooting in Chesapeake.

Just after 3 a.m. Chesapeake police officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of Coveside Lane. When officers arrived on the scene they found 30-year-old Jeremiah Joseph Casarez with multiple gunshot wounds. Casarez was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police initially considered Darnell Maceo Barnwell a person of interest in the investigation, but did not name him as a suspect. They have since been in contact with Barnwell and are no longer looking for him.

On Monday CPD announced the investigation will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.
