ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 22-year-old Chesapeake woman has been charged with reckless driving after police say she crashed her car in Orange County, killing her passenger.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place at around 8:38 a.m. on Sunday, July 21 on Constitution Highway just north of Jacksontown Road.

It was determined that 22-year-old Abigail L. Matthies of Chesapeake was driving a 2013 Mazda CX9 heading north on Constitution Highway when she failed to maneuver a curve and ran off the right side of the roadway, colliding with a tree.

22-year-old Isabelle S. Matties of Chesapeake, who was riding in the car, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Albemarle County, where she later died.

Abigail Matties was charged with reckless driving after the crash, which is still under investigation.
