CHESTER, Mass. (WWLP) – After days of water discoloration, a boil water order has been issued for customers of the Chester Water Department.
According to a notice posted on the town’s official website , the order was made by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection following a review of water system data. Representatives of MassDEP held a meeting with the town’s water commissioners at the water treatment plant Wednesday.
West Springfield issues “do not use” drinking water order The notice from the MassDEP notes confirmed “treatment technique violations that occurred on multiple days during both June and July 2024. As a result of those violations, Chester may not have provided adequate disinfection of the water that was being provided to you.”
Water that is not adequately treated can carry disease-causing viruses, bacteria, and parasites. As a result, customers should boil any water they receive from their tap before drinking, making ice, preparing food, or washing dishes.

The order does not apply to Chester residents who have wells.
Customers of the Chester Water Department can obtain bottled water courtesy of the water commissioners and the Board of Selectmen. It will be made available at the Chester Fire Department Headquarters, 300 Route 20, starting at 8 a.m. Thursday. Customers must show an ID to obtain water.
