Chicago weather: Severe storms move across area

Severe storms are moving through parts of the Chicago area on Sunday.

The Chicago area is under level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms, primarily during the evening hours on Sunday, ABC7 Chicago Meteorologists Tracy Butler and Jaisol Martinez said. The main threats are high winds and heavy rain, which could cause flooding.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston and Will counties in Illinois until 1:45 a.m. Monday.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter counties in Indiana until 1:15 a.m. Monday.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect for Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake (IN), Livingston, Will, Jasper (IN) Newton (IN) and Porter (IN) counties until 1 a.m. Monday.

A Tornado Warning was previously in effect for Cook, Kane and DeKalb counties in Illinois, but it has expired. A Tornado Warning for La Salle and Livingston counties has also expired.

A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for Cook, DuPage and Will counties until 1:30 a.m. Monday.

The Chicago weather forecast Sunday called for severe storms. A Tornado Warning was issued and expired for Cook, Kane and DeKalb counties.

A Flood Watch is in effect for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake (IL), Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage and LaSalle counties until 4 a.m. Monday.

ComEd said 15,000 customers in the Chicago area were without power as of 11 p.m. Sunday.

An earlier line of thunderstorms on Sunday moved through the Joliet area just before 9 a.m. before heading toward Northwest Indiana, prompting Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for some south suburban counties.

Those storms brought rain and wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. Pea-sized hail was also reported.

The Chicago weather forecast calls for severe storms in parts of the area. The heat index is near 100 degrees.

We dried out later Sunday morning, but additional storms materialized northwest of the Chicago area and moved in between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday, Butler and Martinez said. They were expected to linger between midnight and 2 a.m. Monday.

Those storms are arriving as hot and muggy conditions continue in Chicago with the heat index near 100 degrees.

Monday is poised to be the hottest and most uncomfortable in a string of warm and humid days. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s and with the heat index possibly reaching 105 degrees.

Storms are also likely on Monday afternoon with a possibility of damaging winds and a flooding threat. The Chicago area is under a level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Monday.
