The Chicago Cubs selected Florida State third baseman Cam Smith in the 2024 MLB Draft. He likely heads to the pros after having a stellar career with the Seminoles.

Smith joined Florida State in 2023 and made an immediate impact. In 51 games, Smith recorded a .258 batting average with 54 hits, eight doubles, five triples, and 12 home runs with 36 RBIs and 39 runs scored. He was second on the team in runs, hits and walks (21).

In 2024, Smith took a big step forward to become a top prospect. He led the Seminoles with a .387 batting average and only struck out 48 times in 269 at-bats. Smith also tallied 16 home runs with 57 RBIs and 82 runs scored.

Smith’s production helped Florida State reach the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2019. He hit two home runs in back-to-back games against UCF in the NCAA regionals and went 5-for-9 against Uconn in the super regionals. In the College World Series, Smith hit a double in each of his first two games and scored run in a win against North Carolina.

“It’s a dream come true,” Smith told the 11Point7 podcast after playing in the Men’s College World Series. “I’ve always been a Florida State fan and just to know inside that I’m playing for Florida State baseball with this uniform on in Omaha, there’s nothing better.”

Smith played high school baseball at Palm Beach Central in Wellington, Florida. He was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in Florida and the No. 53 overall prosect nationally by Perfect Game.

One of the things that stands out with Smith is that he knows his strengths and weaknesses. “So, one thing about me is anything I hit is pretty much opposite field,” Smith said while mic’d up during MCWS batting practice at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, per MLB.com. “Just straight opposite field, just to get that feel of staying inside the ball. Rarely will you see me pull the ball in BP.”

Smith was a top 100 prospect ahead of the 2022 MLB Draft. Playing at Florida State the last two years as well as spending time in the Cape Cod League helped him earned a No. 14 ranking from MLB this year.

Per Smith’s scouting report, he “already looks the part with plenty of now strength. How much he hits will help dictate how consistently he can get to his plus raw power, and he’s answered that question well last summer and this spring.”
