Tornado watch issued for Chicago area Monday night

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for a vast swath of northern Illinois, including Chicago and its collar counties.

The tornado watch includes Cook County, as well as Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Will and Kankakee Counties. The affected area also includes parts of Rockford and stretches to the Illinois-Iowa border. It will remain in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

NWS officials said Monday night's storms had the potential to produce wind gusts in excess of 80 mph.

The NWS also confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Chicago on Sunday night. One took place in an area that spanned from near Midway Airport and into Bronzeville. It was an EF-0 tornado with peak winds up to 80 mph.

The other tornado, also an EF-0, landed about 10 minutes later in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood and traveled 3.6 miles to Jackson Park. Wind speeds reach up to 80 mph.
