CHICAGO — A federal judge on Friday sentenced a suburban man to 27 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of court-supervised release for his attempt to kill hundreds of people with what he thought was a 1,000-pound car bomb outside a Loop bar more than a decade ago.

Adel Daoud, of Hillside, was originally sentenced five years ago to 16 years in prison, but that sentence was overturned on appeal to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Federal officials in a statement said the attempted bombing was one of three cases against Daoud that was resolved Friday. Another involved a murder-for-hire plot involving his cellmate from his original arrest. Officials said Daoud asked his cellmate at the time to arrange for a gang member to kill the FBI agent who worked undercover to investigate Daoud. The plot was not carried out and the FBI agent was not injured.

The third case against Daoud stemmed from a 2015 assault on a fellow inmate at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center. In that incident, Daoud attacked an inmate who’d drawn what Daoud felt was an insulting picture of the prophet Mohammad. The inmate suffered cuts on his head and a bite mark on an arm, officials said.

Daoud was arrested in an FBI sting in September 2012, when he was 18 years old, after pushing a button on a remote that he believed would set off a bomb powerful enough to destroy much of the block. Agents had supplied the fake device, which was made to smell like diesel fuel and had wiring contacted to bags of fertilizer to convince Daoud it was real.
